Ernest George, geboren in Londen, begon zijn architectonische opleiding in 1856, onder Samuel Hewitt , in combinatie met studies aan de Royal Academy Schools 1857-1859. Na een korte periode op het kantoor van Allen Boulnois ging hij op schetstournee door Frankrijk en Duitsland, wat hem inspireerde tot de bouwstijl die hem beroemd zou maken.
